In global terms, Europe's information and communications technology (ICT) industry is small, overshadowed by the massive software industry and the extensive electronics industry in East Asia. Although it has only one of the top 10 artificial intelligence (AI) research institutionsa (CNRS in France) and no major cloud service providers or Internet platforms on the scale of Amazon, Microsoft, or Google, Europe does innovate in ICT. Whereas Europe's tech industry is cash-strapped, non-tech companies in Europe have more cash holdings than their counterparts in the U.S. or China.b

One of the over-hyped selling points for the self-driving cars of the future is their potential to ultimately be safer than human operators, if for no other reason an amalgam of sensors and computers is more apt to focus 100% on the task at hand, and not get distracted by phone calls, text messages, or scarfing down a Big Mac and a large fries. In a recent Erie Insurance survey, 59% of licensed drivers polled believe self-driving cars will in fact solve the potentially fatal problem of distracted driving, which is said to claim over 3,000 lives and cause more than 400,000 injuries each year. If tomorrow's motorists won't in fact be driving, what can we expect they'll be doing while being transported to and from the office or the salon? Erie's survey largely found that drivers will simply continue their current indulgent activities, only without fear of either lethal or legal consequences.

Improved customer experience 'biggest advantage of AI'
Two-thirds of those surveyed by Morar Consulting for digital agency Squiz said the biggest AI opportunity for customer experience is use of the data it provides. As we explore in this article, AI can help companies to optimize customers experience by better understanding customers and their journeys, offering smart recommendations and providing service and support. A quarter think AI will reduce human error and 15 percent say it will allow them to deliver services more quickly. However, only 24 percent of the businesses surveyed said they are currently using AI, although 46 percent say they're preparing to use it within the next year. The Squiz report concludes, "This is too slow, using algorithms to generate personalized services and deliver effective cross-selling opportunities is increasingly key to all organizations." The main concerns businesses expressed about AI are'lack of human control/oversight' (36 percent) and'expense' (29 percent).
